Cathy, a library associate at the Wells Public Library in Albany,
has loved Halloween her entire life. She loves it so much, in fact,
that she even wears something Halloween-inspired every day in October!
season can be funny or spooky or both,” she says. “And I love how
people tend to let their creativity flow. I grew up waaaaay out in
Gallia county. We never had any trick-or-treaters, so I love that where I
live in Athens, we average 200-300! I start counting down on July 1 and
do a Halloween post on Facebook every day. During the month of October,
I also post the 31 Days of Halloween books, a mixture of titles for all
Join Cathy and fellow Wells librarian Rachel on Tuesday, Oct 25 at 4pm for Not So Spooky Storytime!
“Rumor has it that the Queen of Halloween will be there,” Cathy says,
“so mischief is guaranteed! Costumes are encouraged, but not required.
Delightfully spooky refreshments will also be served.
What does a "typical" day look like for you right now?
I head to work out around 7 am, watch 2 episodes of Gilmore Girls with
my grand-dog, Sirius (he has a super crush on Lorelai), address
Halloween cards (I send out around 75-100, so I have to do it in stages
to avoid hand cramp) and then head to Wells Public Library for the
sparkling part of my day!
Checking books in is dangerous because there are so many books calling my name! “Pick me, Cathy Waller! Look at my intriguing cover…Read the blurb about what awaits inside….You know you can’t resist…” The same is true about shelving the books – "Hmm…..how did I never read this author? Or this one? Look, there is an entire series!!!"
kinds of things have you enjoyed most about your position so far, and
what are you planning/dreaming about starting at ACPL?
have thoroughly enjoyed being able to visit all of the ACPL locations
and meet new colleagues who have become new friends. Every single
location has its own magic and rhythm. My most favorite moments are when
a young person is getting their first library card and is so very
excited! They say things like, “You mean, I can get my own books with my own card?” or “I love the library, the best day is when my mom/dad says it is library day!”
would like to investigate combining the love of books and coffee into
some kind of program for patrons. A Book and a Hot Brew? Chatting with
Cathy? Coffee and Conversation? Stop in for a cup of coffee and share
what book you are currently reading. If someone is excited about a book
they are reading, then that makes me want to try it, too, even if it is
not my usual genre.
you could tell library visitors about a library resource or
service that they might not know about, what would it be?
is the secret gift that just doesn’t stop giving! Free movies (classic
and international) documentaries, educational videos, plus Kanopy Kids,
which has storytime tales. Some
of my favorites include “Creepy Carrots” and “Don’t Let the Pigeon Stay
Up Late!”, plus topics geared to children (like math, science,
languages, and history).
You can stream Kanopy to your TV, cell phone, tablet, or online, so no matter where you are, you can be connected!
